Dating was done following standard tree-ring methods of cross-dating. Tree-rings were visually cross-dated and measured with a binocular stereoscope with a 0.001mm precision. To assess the quality of the cross-dating and identify measurement errors, we utilized the computer program COFECHA (Holmes, 1983). The n° of tree-ring series in the master chronology on period 770-780 AD was 16. (see ELA-COF.txt for COFECHA output, and ELA1-2.txt for ring width measurements on this sample. Rings 243-253 inclusive (1180-1170 cal BP inclusive) dated.

Chronology building with bristlecone typically involves a combination of graphical skeleton plotting (see Stokes and Smiley 1968), and or tree-ring measurement, and then statistical verification using COFECHA.

In the case of SHP-33 (section A) the sample measurements and dating were statistically verified using COFECHA12K version 6.06P. Dating was assigned using correlation of ring widths between 50-year segments and the master SHP mountain chronology lagged successively by 25 years in COFECHA. Second checks on dating were confirmed through the presence/absence of subannual ring features such as frost rings.

Standard convention for bristlecone dating is via the use of the astronomical calendar (AD/BC with 0) – notes on the rationale for this provided in Ferguson et al 1969).

Measured raw ring-width series and the physical samples are therefore labelled according to AD/BC with 0 and dissection was carried out using these astronomical labels. 14C determinations for these years were then converted to years BP for submission to IntCal.

The COFECHA outputs below are also in AD/BC with 0. These demonstrate the excellent correlations for SHP-33 (section A) with the master SHP chronology.

(2) Location: 42° 34’ S, 171° 32’ E; 150 masl.

ii) Cross-dating details:
(1) Intra-site methodology used: Visual ring-width pattern matching followed by measuring and statistical validation using COFECHA (Holmes 1983). The Weka Farm site consists of 173 crossdated trees spanning -454 – 1909 CE (2364 years) with none of the ring-width measurements lodged yet with the International Tree-ring Data Bank (ITRDB). The specific tree selected for this study (LC122) was one of many buried trees excavated from the site and crossdated over the period 704-1140 CE (437 yrs). A master dating series was compiled in the program COFECHA from all the individual measurement series (after first being standardised to a mean of zero and standard deviation of 1.0). The selected tree had a Pearson correlation of 0.487 to the master dating series (once the series being tested had been removed from the master series, Grissino-Mayer 2001) (see 3WEKCOF.OUT). This series also cross-dates to the Oroko Swamp site lodged on the ITRDB reference data (i.e. ITRDB file: newz121.txt) and used in Cook et al., (2002a,b) (see WEKACOF.OUT).

b) Data details
i) Raw series of measurements obtained from sampled trees (e.g. ring-widths) are published or deposited in a secure publicly-accessible archive (measurement unit and data format must be specified): Complete site collection of 173 ring-width series will be lodged at the ITRDB by mid-2019 after a paper has been submitted. Tree-ring data for LC122 (see LC122.rwl).
