Chronology building with bristlecone typically involves a combination of graphical skeleton plotting (see Stokes and Smiley 1968), and or tree-ring measurement, and then statistical verification using COFECHA.

In the case of SHP-33 (section A) the sample measurements and dating were statistically verified using COFECHA12K version 6.06P. Dating was assigned using correlation of ring widths between 50-year segments and the master SHP mountain chronology lagged successively by 25 years in COFECHA. Second checks on dating were confirmed through the presence/absence of subannual ring features such as frost rings.

Standard convention for bristlecone dating is via the use of the astronomical calendar (AD/BC with 0) – notes on the rationale for this provided in Ferguson et al 1969).

Measured raw ring-width series and the physical samples are therefore labelled according to AD/BC with 0 and dissection was carried out using these astronomical labels. 14C determinations for these years were then converted to years BP for submission to IntCal.

The COFECHA outputs below are also in AD/BC with 0. These demonstrate the excellent correlations for SHP-33 (section A) with the master SHP chronology.

m) Methodology used for dating:
Original dating was done by comparison of ring-widths (measured to a precision of 1/50mm) with those of other samples from the site. The methodology used for dating is described in (Baillie, 1982). The sample was part of a twenty-one sample site master chronology. This site master chronology was compared with other Irish site chronologies and then included in the Belfast Long Chronology BLC7000 (Pilcher, et al. 1984). The correlation t values are based on CROS84 (Munro, 1984). These are historic dates BC without the year zero.
