m) Methodology used for dating:
n) The calendar age of the rings was determined with two cross-dating approaches: skeleton plotting and correlation of tree-ring width measurements. Originally the collected specimen was crossdated with skeleton plotting by C.W. Ferguson in 1971, and archived at the LTRR. The specimen’s surface has prick points for the decadal ring count and written dates in astronomical years. Digital catalog of LTRR Collection has records of this specimen as 71#59 and 1971#059. Later the ring widths of this specimen were measured and included into the Methuselah Walk chronology of Bristlecone Pine (LaMarche and Harlan 1973). The ID of this TRW series is #995924 for the period -5924-5422 (503 yrs). See below a copy of COFECHA output with correlation table between this series and the Methuselah Walk master chronology.
For the 14C study, we made new measurements of tree-ring widths for the interval -5559-5371 astronomical years (189 yrs) to confirm the crossdates of rings to be sampled. ID of this TRW series is # 71-59 (see attached 197159 data). A wooden bock was cut from the specimen following the measuring line (see photo at the next page). The sampled specimen was placed back to the archive.

Cross-dating Steps:
In 2016 for the purpose of 5480 BC excursion study (Miyake et al. 2017, PNAS), C. Baisan and M. Salzer confirmed the dating to be dissected rings with new ring width measurements (C. Baisan) for the interval from -5559 to -5371 (189 yrs). The new measurements were correlated with the Methuselah Walk master chronology. I. Panyushkina supervised the ring cutting and re-checked the target interval dates with the MW master record.
The dates are given in astronomical years. The TRW series includes the Zero Year.

m) Methodology used for dating:

Graphically using the skeleton plot method (Stokes and Smiley 1968), and published as part of Ferguson’s original chronology in 1969. This wood was later remeasured by Salzer as part of the Methuselah Walk chronology and dating confirmed using COFECHA12K version 6.06P. Decades were kept as vouchers from the original 14C sampling of the bristlecone record. These decades and the remaining three sections of material representing the single tree are marked up in astronomical calendar with the year 0. The decades sent to Southon et al. were mistakenly marked 800 to 350 BC because the sender did not realize the significance of the negative year numbers denoting AD/BC with 0. Instead the sample packets were mis-labelled as “BC” which led to the final publication being offset by 1 year. Years in the ring-width data and table below are the correct astronomical years including year 0. The attached Excel datasheet is also corrected for this issue.

The table below shows the good correlation between 1963-043 and the Methusalah Walk master chronology (Salzer and Hughes 2007) with the 1963-043 tree removed.

Chronology building with bristlecone typically involves a combination of graphical skeleton plotting (see Stokes and Smiley 1968), and or tree-ring measurement, and then statistical verification using COFECHA.

In the case of SHP-33 (section A) the sample measurements and dating were statistically verified using COFECHA12K version 6.06P. Dating was assigned using correlation of ring widths between 50-year segments and the master SHP mountain chronology lagged successively by 25 years in COFECHA. Second checks on dating were confirmed through the presence/absence of subannual ring features such as frost rings.

Standard convention for bristlecone dating is via the use of the astronomical calendar (AD/BC with 0) – notes on the rationale for this provided in Ferguson et al 1969).

Measured raw ring-width series and the physical samples are therefore labelled according to AD/BC with 0 and dissection was carried out using these astronomical labels. 14C determinations for these years were then converted to years BP for submission to IntCal.

The COFECHA outputs below are also in AD/BC with 0. These demonstrate the excellent correlations for SHP-33 (section A) with the master SHP chronology.
