m) Methodology used for dating:
Dating was done by multiple comparisons of the time series in question with the regional master sequences. The series are first indexed using a Hollstein-transformation (Hollstein 1980, 14). Then the candidate for crossdating is tested in every possible synchronous position with each master chronology, using software DendroPlus (in-house software programmed by Ulrich Ruoff, version of 17.3.2014). For every position t-values and Gleichläufigkeits-percentages are noted. Those positions that produce results above a given threshold (defined individually) are noted in a table.
The date is determined by checking the possible synchronous positions in the table visually and by verifying that the context information as a priori-information do not rule out a given date. As re-use of older timber is common, context information are handled very conservatively and are mostly used as additional indication of possible problems.
