m) Methodology used for dating:
The calendar age of the rings was determined with two cross-dating approaches: skeleton plotting and correlation of tree-ring width measurements. Originally the collected specimen was crossdated with skeleton plotting by C.W. Ferguson in 1971, and archived at the LTRR. The specimen’s surface has prick points for the decadal ring count and written dates (see photo below). For Miyake et al 2017 study we measured tree-ring widths for the interval -4800 to – 4599 astronomical BC years (Zero Year included) and cut off a wood block near the measuring line. ID of TRW series is BCL01. The series of measured tree-ring widths (202 yrs) was cross-dated with the Methuselah Walk chronology of Bristlecone Pine (INTRDB file ca535.rwl Span -6000-1979 submitted by D. A. Graybill). The dating was verified with Person correlation in COFECHA program. Correlation with master is 0.75.

m) Methodology used for dating: The calendar age of the rings was determined with two cross-dating approaches: skeleton plotting and correlation of tree-ring width measurements. Originally the collected specimen was crossdated with skeleton plotting by C.W. Ferguson in 1972, and archived at the LTRR. The specimen dates are between -4240 and -3390. The specimen’s surface has prick points for the decadal ring count and written dates (see photo below). For Miyake et al 2017 study we measured tree-ring widths for the interval -4200 to – 3930 astronomical BC years (Zero Year included) and cut off a wood block near the measuring line. ID of TRW series is 72-052. The series of measured tree-ring widths (271 yrs) was cross-dated with the Methuselah Walk chronology of Bristlecone Pine (INTRDB file ca535.rwl Span -6000-1979 submitted by D. A. Graybill). The dating was verified with Person correlation in COFECHA program. Correlation with master is 0.61. COFECHA output file is 72-052 COF.out (position #1 in the list of cofecha series).

The specimen was collected in 1972, and originally dated by C.W. Ferguson. For Miyake et al. 2017 study, the dating was confirmed by C. Baisan and I. Panyushkina. F. Miyake separated the rings.
