The Landnám tephra layer is characterised by two distinct tephra components: a lower rhyolitic tephra layer which is overlain by a basaltic tephra layer. Both of these were deposited following the ~AD 871 Vatnaöldur eruption which saw simultaneous eruptions of the basaltic Veidivötn-Bárðarbunga volcanic system and the silicic Torfajökull complex.
